He Joined Army for Param Vir Chakra;;Lt Pandey

he interviewer at the Services Selection Board (SSB) asked him why he wanted to join the Army? And pat came the reply: "I want to win the Param Vir Chakra."
True to his words, Lieutenant Manoj Kumar Pandey did win the country's highest gallantry honour but posthumously.on of a small-time businessman, the Lucknow hero laid down his life while capturing Jubar Top on Khalubar Hills in the Batalik Sector during Operation Vijay in 1999. Since then, the saga of Lt Pandey has left many teary-eyed and many reminisce with nostalgia.
A brilliant student and a dedicated son, the braveheart, nurtured the aspiration of being a soldier right through his days in Sainik School, Lucknow. "He was a top boxer and never came second in academics. Even though he left home at a young age, he always missed his mother. He used to write letters and in fact had written a couple of poems on his mother," said his father Gopi Chand Pandey.
"For us, Manoj was everything and it feels like his mother and me too have passed away with his death," adds Gopi Chand in a heavy voice.
"He used to live for his mission and used to do a lot of homework before every task. He knew he couldn't risk the life of his subordinates by going for a blind attack," said Pawan Mishra, one of the closest friends of Lt Pandey.
Commissioned into 1/11 Gurkha Rifles, Lt Manoj was directed to capture Jubar Top on Khalubar Hills in the Batalik Sector, and the martyr, decided to move with his platoon right in the middle of the night to climb the steep hills for the victorious mission.
Though the path was extremely difficult, Manoj, using his presence of mind, decided to move along with his men as he knew the area was unguarded by Pakistan.
"Enemy soldiers noticed when the platoon was just few metres away from their target. Manoj had anticipated this, and before the Pakistani soldiers could set their rifles on our troops, he moved the platoon to an advantageous location and began his final assault. Soon, the Pakistani soldiers resorted to heavy firing and Manoj was hit in the leg and shoulder, but he kept advancing," said his father.
For a brief while, the rivals managed to stall the Indian attack, but Manoj's team was beyond their control. Knowing that they were only metres away from their final objective, Manoj decided to go for a final hand-to-hand assault and led the charge.
"Even though the bullets were zooming past Manoj, he managed to reach the first bunker and killed two Pakistanis. Soon, the Gurkha soldiers took over the Pakistanis, and Manoj, kept clearing bunker after bunker.
Even though he was bleeding profusely, nothing could stop him," recalled school friend Pawan, to whom Manoj used to write regularly, narrating the battleground incidents.
Just before the lieutenant reached the final bunker, a bullet pierced his forehead. But before he collapsed, he shouted "na chhodnu" (don't leave them) ordering his men not to spare a single Pakistani.
The full frontal attack launched by Lt Pandey finally led the Gurkhas to Jubar Top one of the most vital points in the entire Kargil battle.
In the last letter, which Manoj wrote to Pawan he said, "I really don't know what will happen the next moment, but I can assure you and all my countrymen that we would certainly push out the intruders at whatever cost we have to pay, may be our lives."
The letter dated June 19, 1999 reached Pawan on June 22 and before the friend could reply, the soldier had already put on his boots for the battle.Manoj died fighting the enemy on the intervening night of July 2 and 3.
And the words of his mother, truly sums up the heroic life of the soldier: "more than us, he was the son of his motherland. He was born with a special purpose."
Indeed, he was.
Pillar of strength
The ageing parents of the lieutenant feel the country has forgotten its war heroes. "These were young boys in their twenties and thirties. But not for a single moment they feared anything. Their country meant more to them than anything else. It feels bad that the same country has forgotten them.
"It doesn't affect us. Manoj never died, we are living by his name," said his father.
Martyr's diary
Manoj used to maintain a personal dairy, where he penned down everything he learnt. On several instances, he poured his heart out. The poetry he wrote in the memory of his doting mother read: "she is the star which shines brightly in the darkness, some one who will always give and bless."
Just below the poem, are the four lines written in bold letters, which shows the metal, out of which Lt Manoj Kumar Pandey's Param Vir Chakra was carved: "If death strikes before I prove my blood, I promise (swear), I will kill death."
Police officer Gifts kurta-pyjama to Kasab

An officer of the Crime Branch, who was part of the investigating team in the 26/11 terror attack case, has gifted a kurta-pyjama to Pakistani terrorist Mohammed Ajmal Kasab, the trial court was informed on Friday.
Kasab came to the trial court wearing white kurta and pyjama which prompted the judge to ask him who had given him the dress.
The judge posed this question because it did not appear to be of Kasab's size.
Kasab blushed but did not give any answer.
However, when the judge repeated his query, police officers escorting him said, "Sir, Kadam has given Kasab this dress".
They were referring to Dinesh Kadam, API, unit three, Crime Branch.
Usually, Kasab comes to the court dressed in T-shirt and trousers but sometimes he also wears kurta-pyjama.
Two other accused, Fahim Ansari and Sabauddin Ahmed, who are facing 26/11 terror trial along with Kasab, wear T-shirts and trousers or kurta-pyjama.
To mark his protest against the arrest of Uttar Pradesh Congress chief Rita Bahuguna Joshi, former Indian cricket captain and Congress MP Azharuddin will court arrest in his constituency Moradabad Friday.
"Azharuddin will lead a protest rally and court arrest after the Friday namaz in Moradabad," said a Uttar Pradesh Congress Committee (UPCC) spokesperson.
Joshi was arrested Wednesday night in Ghaziabad for allegedly having made derogatory remarks against Chief Minister Mayawati at a public meeting in Moradabad. She was charged under the Scheduled Castes and Scheduled Tribes (Prevention of Atrocities) Act, 1989.
Just about the same time, her house in Lucknow was attacked and torched by a mob.
On Thursday, the chief judicial magistrate in Moradabad ordered Joshi to be sent to 14 days judicial custody. Her request for bail will be made before the Moradabad additional district judge Friday.
Hundreds of Congress workers gathered around the Moradabad jail to express solidarity with the UPCC chief.
At a meeting in Moradabad Wednesday, Joshi had mocked at the state director general of police flying down to Dalit rape victims in recent days and spending huge amounts to distribute compensation of Rs.25,000 to Rs.75,000 to each of them.
She reportedly told the women that they should not only throw the compensation money back at the government's face, but if this was how the rape victims were going to get justice, "tell her (Mayawati) we would give Rs.1 crore" if she faced the same trauma.
Congress chief Sonia Gandhi was learnt to have been angry with Joshi for having made such a remark. In a meeting with Congress MPs from Uttar Pradesh in New Delhi Thursday, Gandhi described the remark as "completely unacceptable".
Joshi Thursday clarified: "I had simply sought to draw people's attention to the fact that Mayawati's dole of Rs.25,000 to every Dalit rape victim was quite ironical as the state police chief was spending lakhs on the helicopter ride that he undertakes to hand over that paltry amount."
"My intention was to remind Mayawati that being a woman she should realise that a paltry monetary compensation cannot make up for what a woman loses on account of rape," she told reporters.
"As soon as I found that my statement had been twisted, I promptly made it a point to offer my apologies," Joshi said.
She termed the attack on her house as "state-sponsored terrorism".
Mayawati said Joshi's earlier remarks were "objectionable, reprehensible and highly condemnable".

World no 1 test batsman Gautam Gambhir's appetite for runs has his mentors amazed
Not many had given Gautam Gambhir a chance to be successful when he started his international career. The left-hand opener did not exactly exude confidence with his body language and technique, which led him to be in and out of the Indian team.
Hence, to become No 1 in the International Cricket Council's Test rankings is a remarkable achievement.
Gambhir is the first Indian batsman to hold the top position after Rahul Dravid.
Even as everyone wrote him off, his India 'A' coach, Sandeep Patil, was among the few who were convinced of his early potential. Coach Patil was a delighted man yesterday.
The way Gambhir got out in his early days, there was a question mark over his technique to survive in international cricket. Patil said: "What is technique? What counts is runs under pressure. More than technique you need to have the temperament and basic skills. The will to survive and will to fight. Gambhir is a fighter, whether he is playing for India, India A, Delhi or Daredevils. The best thing was he hated to get out. He always wanted to be the best," Patil, who handled Gambhir during his term with the India 'A' team from 2004 to 2006, told MiD DAY.
"His attitude impressed me the most. He has got a special kind of spirit; he is so hungry to do well, so hungry for runs. He has got fire in him. He can pick up a fight with even guys like McGrath or Warne. He was never in awe of any bowler," said Patil.
But the fiery temperament is a double-edged sword and the smarter opponents can work it out in their favour by making you lose your temper. Patil said Gambhir has learnt to control his aggression better and it has paid off.
"I used to call him Amitabh Bachchan, the angry young man. He is like a tubelight as he loses his cool very fast. Lately, I have observed he has developed patience too. Initially, he would get worked up and walk into the trap but today I see a different Gambhir.
"When you are at the crease you are alone and you have to fight your own battle. You have seen him take a panga with the Australians, with Afridi and performed. There are very few people who talk and perform and he is one of them," said Patil.
Former India opener and Gambhir's former Delhi coach Chetan Chauhan said: "What I like about him is that he is playing in all the three forms of the game and he adjusts his game according to the format. His success has been a result of continuous hardwork, learning, aggressiveness, guts, solid technique and right attitude. He takes his training very seriously and practices with focus as he would in the game."
Dhoni accorded Z category security Dhoni belongs to special category of people,'' and hence the government decided to provide Z category security cover to the icon cricketer, official sources said today.
The review of the security measures supposed to be given to Mahi assumed significance in the wake of inadequate security deployed at the Birsa Munda airport on July 14, when he arrived in the state capital.
Cricket lovers raised question about the issue as to why the government did not take security of the cricketer seriously considering his status and consequent threat perception.

In an effort to check forgeries and misuse of passports, Government is rolling out E-passports that will carry biometric information in a chip.
Minister of State for External Affairs Shashi Tharoor informed Rajya Sabha that a pilot project to issue E-passports to diplomats and officials have already been started.
"A pilot project for the issue of e-passports in the category of official and diplomatic passports has already been launched on June 25 last year," he said replying to a question.
At present, a passport contains facial imprint but the E-passport will have all the personal details, including finger-prints, of the person carrying it.
The government had asked the national informatics centre (NIC) and IIT (Kanpur) to work on the E-passport project which has successfully developed it.
After Baroda batsman Irfan Pathan reportedly decided to marry his long time girlfriend staying in Australia, his parents are now searching a suitable match for elder son Yusuf Pathan.
"We are searching for suitable match for our elder son Yusuf Pathan and there is no hurry," said father Mehbubkhan Pathan.
"For Yusuf, we have started receiving queries from various places in the country and we are looking into it," he said adding, "we want someone who can understand Yusuf and adjust with him".
According to Mehbubkhan, their priority is to choose a girl for Yusuf as he is their eldest son and they can think of fixing of marriage date which can take some time depending on Allah
The 26-year-old, who played for Rajasthan Royals during second edition of IPL, had said he would marry when his parents find a suitable girl for him.
Yusuf was included in the list of 30 probables for Champions Trophy to be played in South Africa in September.
Mehbubkhan said both Yusuf and Irfan have been working hard and hoped Irfan may find a berth in the Indian Team to play in Sri Lanka before the Champion Trophy.

Security agencies in the country’s financial capital, Mumbai, have been placed on high alert following a warning from the Intelligence Bureau (IB) that terrorists are planning a sea-borne attack not withstanding the rough weather conditions, reports said on Wednesday. The terror threat is among the most serious ones the maximum city has faced in the past two years; with the IB identifying at least seven places in Maharashtra that may be targeted by the extremists. Among these seven possible targets are a reputed bank in Mumbai, several key Railway stations, malls and five-star hotels, reports added.
"We have increased our vigil at some banks in the city and also railway stations following the IB warning on July 8," Maharashtra Minister of State for Home Naseem Khan said here today.
According to police sources, vigil has been increased at railway stations like Churchgate, Dadar, Andheri (on Western line) and a few on the Central Railway's Harbour line in neighbouring Navi Mumbai.
The threat comes even as the city and its civic agencies continue to battle the heavy rains that have kept Mumbai on tenterhooks for the past three days. The administration had even issued a flood warning on Tuesday after the Mithi river crossed the danger mark, but the water levels have now subsided.
Reports said the IB issued the alert on July 8 and also dispatched photographs of the seven ‘targets’ to the security agencies. The IB alert also mentioned four dates on which terrorists plan to carry out the attacks, sources said.
The alert comes in the wake of several reports and Home Minister P Chidambaram’s warning that terrorists based in Pakistan could carry out an attack similar to the ones witnessed in the city from November 26 to 29 last year.
The Coast Guard has already stepped up patrolling along the western coast following intelligence inputs of a possible terror strikes in states like Maharashtra, Goa and Gujarat.
"Following the receipt of the intelligence inputs that there was a possibility of attack through the sea route, three Offshore Patrolling Vessels have been patrolling the western coast," Coast Guard sources said.
Sources said the IB issued the July 8 alert following disclosures made by a terror suspect nabbed in Jammu and Kashmir. The police had also recovered photographs of targets in Maharashtra from the suspect.
The IB however has no specific information about how many terrorists could be part of the possible attack.
Apart from last year’s Mumbai terror strikes – the deadliest terror attacks India has ever witnessed, the city was rattled on July 11, 2006 as well when co-ordinated blasts rocked seven local trains, killing 188 people.
Shiv Sena chief Bal Thackeray underwent an angiography Tuesday morning and is likely to operated upon, a party insider said.
Thackeray, 83, was admitted to the Lilavati Hospital here Monday following breathing problems.
After the angiography and the medical panel's expert advice, Thackeray may undergo a surgery later Tuesday, a party insider said, requesting anonymity.
The Lilavati Hospital had set up a five-member panel to treat him - Jaleel Parker, who has been regularly treating him; J.J. Dalal, Samuel Mathew, Ajit Menon and Prakash Jindani, who examined the senior leader to determine the course of treatment Monday.
Concerned about his advanced age and frail health, the medicos have discussed the treatment options available with Thackeray's family.
Son Udhav has cut short his trip to the US and is expected return to Mumbai later Tuesday to be with his father, who underwent a heart surgery a few years ago.
Thackeray's estranged nephew and Maharashtra Navnirman Sena chief Raj Thackeray, senior party leaders like Manohar Joshi, party MPs, legislators and senior leaders of the ally Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) have been thronging the hospital to inquire after his health.
Thackeray had been admitted to the same hospital June 18 for treating similar respiratory problems, causing concern among family and party members. He was discharged after six days in hospital.
Earlier, in March this year, Thackeray had spent 11 days in Lilavati Hospital for similar health complaints.

Everyone knows how much Salman Khan loves his pets. After Myson's death earlier this year, Salman Khan's other pet dog Myjaan took seriously ill last Sunday. Myjaan's condition became so bad that Salman's vet advised him to take her to the SPCA Hospital in Parel. Salman drove down with Myjaan to the hospital as late as 10.30 pm. But the dog's condition was so critical that the hospital doctors advised him to admit his pet immediately.
Impressed and appalled
Says a source, "Salman was impressed with the staff and their work but was disappointed at the appalling conditions of the dog ward. The facilities were not very clean as well. Salman requested for a separate room for Myjaan and asked his keeper to stay back to look after her."
But Salman didn't leave the matter there. Adds the source, "He promised Lt Col (Dr) J C Khanna, the SPCA secretary who took him around the hospital that he would help repair and renovate the dog ward. The repair of a ward costs crores but that didn't faze Salman."
In recovery
Lt Col (Dr) J C Khanna confirms, "It's true that Salman Khan's dog Myjaan was admitted by the actor on Sunday night. He adores Myjaan and was extremely anxious about her. The next day, when he returned in the morning, he went through the wards. This was his first visit to SPCA and he was quite happy with the facilities. Myjaan is still undergoing treatment. When she was admitted, she was seriously sick and was given a separate room. Initially, Salman visited for the first couple of days but now his caretakers are here. His pet was very critical when brought in. Her blood count was low earlier but she's recovering now."
Promise kept?
Did Salman promise to renovate the dog ward? Says Khanna, "Salman might have casually mentioned about doing something for the dog ward but then lots of people say they will do this and that and finally are not able to for various reasons, so I can't really say what he promised. Though we have excellent equipment, funds are always required, as the wards need to be repaired. Like the Mumbai Gaurakshak Trust has renovated the cattle ward while somebody else has repaired the cat ward. Now the dog wards need to be repaired."
As far as giving a special room for Salman's pet dog is concerned, Dr Khanna says, "One of the rooms which is the cardiac center is lying vacant as the ECG is not working. So, if someone wants a special room for his/her pet or to stay the whole day and night, we give that room
